Three 20-year-old hikers found themselves stranded on a rocky face of Mount Shasta in Northern California after relying on Google’s Gemini chatbot for trip planning. The group underestimated their fitness, brought insufficient food, and summited too late in the day to descend safely before dark. By morning, they were lost on difficult terrain, and one hiker had injured his knee. Nick Meyers, a program manager at the US Forest Service Mount Shasta Wilderness Climbing and Avalanche Center, noted that while the group attempted to prepare, they effectively turned off their critical thinking by trusting the AI.

Mount Shasta Incidents Highlight AI Risks

The Mount Shasta group is not an isolated case. Meyers reported other recent incidents involving artificial intelligence. One visitor pitched a tent near a “No Camping” sign, insisting she had the right to do so because an AI tool told her she could. Another hiker wandered at a trailhead carrying an AI-generated map that placed prominent mountain features on the wrong side of the range. In British Columbia, a helicopter crew rescued a 16-year-old from a ledge on Crown Mountain after the teen used Anthropic’s Claude chatbot to plan his route. The teen also consulted Google Maps and AllTrails, but the viral nature of the story highlighted the growing role of generative AI in outdoor recreation.

Chip Jenkins, superintendent of Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, observed a sharp increase in visitors using AI for travel information. He stated that the percentage of visitors reporting AI use jumped from zero to 26 percent over the past year. Jenkins predicted that this upward trend would not flatten soon.

Search and Rescue Data Shows Mixed Trends

It remains unclear whether the rise in AI usage directly correlates with an increase in backcountry accidents. Meyers noted that his office averages about a dozen rescues annually, and 2026 is shaping up to be an average year. In Wyoming, search and rescue calls have actually decreased. There were 312 calls so far in 2026, compared to 466 in 2025 and 377 in 2024. Jim Moss, a Colorado-based recreation attorney and search and rescue volunteer, suggested that AI is simply the latest tool in a long line of technologies that lead people into trouble. He pointed to the previous decade, when social media platforms like Instagram led to deadly consequences, and the era before that, when reliance on Google Maps caused similar issues.

Moss attributed the overall increase in outdoor recreation to a two-decade push by media to encourage people to spend time outside. This has resulted in more people entering wild spaces, some of whom may lack the experience to handle complex environments. The question remains how questionable advice from a robot will influence this growing population.

    Cognitive Surrender and Misinformation

Chris Flathmann, a human-centered computing professor at Clemson University, identified unique risks in using chatbots for outdoor planning. He warned that AI systems can “hallucinate,” presenting misinformation as fact. More dangerously, users may experience “cognitive surrender,” where they stop thinking critically because the AI sounds authoritative. Flathmann explained that when an AI pretends to be an expert on an unfamiliar topic, users cannot easily challenge its claims. Once critical thinking stops, it is difficult to restart, especially in stressful backcountry situations.

Chatbots often tell users what they want to hear, providing extensive directions that sound credible but are scraped from unreliable sources like Reddit threads or outdated YouTube videos. Flathmann noted that while social media offers inspiration, AI provides instructions, whether correct or not. He described this as the natural evolution of using such tools.

Experts advise hikers to double-check information against authoritative sources like public-land agency maps, trail association websites, or guidebooks. Talking to a real guide, forest official, or park ranger is also recommended. Meyers emphasized the need for serious planning when entering dangerous areas. “If you’re going to go into places that will kill you,” he said, “you should take your planning seriously.”
