GOG has announced a comprehensive revamp of its Galaxy desktop client, confirming that the launcher will officially support Linux for the first time. The update, scheduled for release in 2027, also includes significant improvements to the Windows and macOS versions of the software.
The announcement was made during the company’s first “GOG Showcase” on Thursday. The studio acknowledged that the current iteration of the client has struggled to meet user expectations since its initial beta phase. In a statement, the company noted that they wanted to “do it properly” before releasing the new version to the public.
GOG Galaxy Linux Support and Client Overhaul
The upcoming 2027 release marks a significant expansion for the DRM-free storefront, which has historically focused on Windows. The new Linux client will allow users to manage their libraries across the operating system without relying on third-party tools. While alternatives like Heroic, Faugus, and Lutris already exist for Linux users, an official client from GOG provides a centralized option for those who prefer a unified experience.
Alongside the Linux expansion, GOG stated that the Windows and Mac versions of the client have been reworked to be simpler and faster. The update aims to provide cleaner methods for viewing game libraries. Despite these structural changes, the company emphasized that its core promise remains unchanged: GOG Galaxy is entirely optional. Users can still access offline installers for their purchased games, ensuring that digital ownership is preserved regardless of whether they use the launcher.
GOG Social Beta Launches Now
In addition to the launcher updates, GOG introduced a new social feature called GOG Social. Described as a “quiet, tidy hangout for actual game talk,” the platform is designed to centralize community interaction without the distractions often found on larger social networks.
The new social hub will feature screenshot galleries, video sharing, and community polls. It also includes threaded replies and explicitly promises zero algorithmic noise. This approach aims to foster direct conversation among users rather than driving engagement through automated content feeds.
Users interested in testing the new social features can sign up for the GOG Social beta immediately via the GOG website. The launcher revamp, however, remains on the 2027 timeline. The company has not yet provided a specific release date for the new Galaxy client, but the announcement confirms that the long-awaited Linux support is now part of the official development roadmap.
