A married couple is divided over how to approach dining out, with the husband insisting on pre-reading menus to maintain his weight loss progress and the wife arguing that the practice destroys the joy of the experience.

Claire, who has been married to Abdeen for seven years, says his habit of analyzing restaurant menus before they arrive takes the surprise and pleasure out of going to a nice restaurant. Abdeen, who has lost a significant amount of weight using medication, says pre-reading is essential for him to stay in control of his calorie intake and avoid making poor choices in the moment.

    Weight Loss and Menu Pre-Reading

Abdeen was approximately four stone heavier when the couple met. He has since lost weight using injections, a method he describes as effective but expensive. He stopped using the medication about a year ago after reaching his goal weight, but he remains vigilant about his diet to prevent regaining the weight.

According to Abdeen, restaurants present a challenge because menu items often contain hidden fats and unclear calorie counts. He looks up menus at home to plan his meals, deciding whether to skip a starter or choose a healthier option earlier in the day. He says this preparation gives him a sense of control and prevents him from making bad decisions when he is hungry and at the table.

“It’s easy for someone who has never had to think much about their weight to choose food on the spot,” Abdeen said. “I don’t think knowing what you’re going to eat turns dining out at a nice restaurant into a canteen experience. We’re still spending time together, having a drink, talking and enjoying the food.”

    The Case for Spontaneity

Claire, who describes herself as naturally slim with no history of food issues, finds Abdeen’s routine tedious. She prefers to decide what to order only after seeing what other diners are eating or after speaking with the waiting staff. She says Abdeen’s habit of downloading menus and asking her what she plans to order before they arrive ruins the surprise for her.

She also notes that Abdeen does not even look at the physical menu when they arrive at the restaurant. He simply sits down and states what he wants to order. Claire says this makes her feel rushed and cheapens the experience, making it feel like they are in a canteen waiting for a pre-ordered tray rather than people with sophisticated palates taking their time.

“I want him to be more spur-of-the-moment because that will improve my dining experience,” Claire said. “I don’t think his way of doing things is any fun.”

    Compromise and Reader Opinions

Claire has proposed a compromise: Abdeen can continue to look at menus beforehand, but he should not read them out loud to her or ask her what she is ordering. This would allow her to retain the element of surprise while respecting his need for preparation.

Readers of the source publication offered mixed views on the dispute. Some agreed with Claire, suggesting that Abdeen could still open the menu at the restaurant to discuss options, which would give her time to decide without feeling rushed. Others argued that Claire should accommodate Abdeen’s strategy, noting that many people managing their weight avoid restaurants entirely and should be grateful for his approach.

One reader noted that while pre-reading menus is a common guilty pleasure, the rushed nature of Abdeen’s ordering process is the main issue. Another reader emphasized the mental and physical impact on Abdeen, suggesting that Claire needs to see the bigger picture regarding his health journey.

Abdeen maintains that he is not trying to force Claire to choose in advance. He only asks what she is ordering because he has already looked at the menu himself. He is willing to stop reading the menu out loud if it causes friction, but he refuses to stop pre-reading entirely, stating that spontaneity around food is what previously caused him to gain weight.
