Jeremy Renner has confirmed he will not be appearing in the upcoming Marvel Studios film “Avengers: Doomsday.” The actor stated that the absence of his character, Hawkeye, will likely result in a defeat for the superhero team. He attributed the casting decision to the studio rather than his own refusal to participate.
“No, no, no, no. Not in that one,” Renner said during a recent interview when asked about his return. “‘Doomsday’ I’m not in, so the Avengers will probably lose, just so you know they didn’t call me, so it’s their fault. They’re going to lose.”
Renner on Doomsday and Hawkeye
While the full roster of characters for “Avengers: Doomsday” remains undisclosed, Renner made his position clear. He did not express disappointment about being left out of the script. Instead, he framed the exclusion as a strategic error by the filmmakers that would negatively impact the plot outcome.
Renner previously portrayed Hawkeye in several major releases. The source material lists his appearances in “The Avengers,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and “Avengers: Endgame.” He also made brief appearances in “Thor” and “Captain America: Civil War.” His absence from the next installment marks a shift in the character’s trajectory within the franchise.
Recovery and Future MCU Plans
Despite not returning for “Doomsday,” Renner remains enthusiastic about the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe. He expressed excitement for the re-release of “Avengers: Endgame” in theaters. This special screening occurred ahead of the December 18 release date for “Doomsday.” The re-release allowed audiences to revisit the 2019 film before the new chapter begins.

In 2025, Renner indicated he was open to returning to the MCU in other capacities. He mentioned the possibility of a second season of the “Hawkeye” series or other projects. “I’m always happy to be in that world, man. I love all those guys, I love the character,” he told Empire magazine at the time. He added that he believed a second season was likely and that he was physically preparing for such work.
Renner’s readiness to return follows a significant physical recovery. In 2023, he was hospitalized after a snowmobile accident. A Sno-Cat, a large snow plow weighing at least 14,330 pounds, ran over him. The incident caused extensive injuries, including eight broken ribs in 14 places, a broken right knee and ankle, a broken left leg tibia, a broken left ankle, a broken right clavicle, and a broken right shoulder.
By 2025, Renner stated he had recovered “more than 150%” from the accident. He noted that this recovery meant he was ready to perform his own stunts for future Marvel films. He joked about his physical condition, saying, “I don’t know if anybody wants to see me in tights, but my body will look good in the tights.”
Renner’s comments highlight the ongoing speculation surrounding the cast of “Avengers: Doomsday.” His explicit statement that he is not in the film closes one line of inquiry, while his openness to future projects leaves the door open for his return in a different form or series.
