Reddit is preparing to remove anonymous access to its platform, a move that will require all users to create an account and sign in to view content. The social news aggregator announced the shift during a recent investor call, with CEO Steve Huffman stating that the company plans to begin testing the change in regions outside the United States before implementing it globally.
Search Traffic Collapse Drives Change
The decision comes as the platform faces a sharp decline in visitors arriving from search engines. Huffman revealed that Reddit lost an average of one million search referrals per week in October. The primary cause is the rise of artificial intelligence summaries in search results, which provide direct answers to user queries without requiring a click through to the original source.
“Google has really shifted in their relationship with the rest of the internet,” Huffman said. He noted that a search query that previously led to a specific Reddit thread is now likely to be answered by an AI-generated summary, effectively bypassing the community site entirely.

This loss of organic traffic has forced the company to rethink its user acquisition strategy. Huffman emphasized that the majority of Reddit’s revenue, which exceeds 80 percent, is generated by logged-in users and app users. The new policy aims to establish the site as a direct daily habit rather than relying on external search traffic to drive engagement.
Data Protection and Revenue Focus
Beyond the immediate impact of search algorithms, the logged-in requirement serves a strategic purpose regarding data access. Huffman stated that the change will help protect access to Reddit’s “extremely valuable corpus of data.” The platform currently holds AI training agreements with major technology firms including OpenAI and Google. While Huffman declined to announce specific details about these deals, he confirmed that leadership is in active discussions to ensure any arrangements serve the best economic and strategic interests of the company.

Financial results from the third quarter of 2026 show that Reddit continues to grow, with revenue increasing by 53 percent year-over-year and weekly active users rising by 16 percent. However, the company’s share price dropped following the call due to a forecast for the next quarter that fell short of market expectations. The logged-in shift is part of a broader effort to stabilize revenue streams through algorithmic feeds, improved app performance, and new features such as visual podcasts and games.
The transition marks a significant departure from the platform’s history as an open forum accessible to anyone with a web browser. By forcing authentication, Reddit aims to create a more controlled environment that prioritizes registered users and secures its data assets against unrestricted scraping by AI developers.
