Nintendo reported a significant decline in hardware sales for the Switch 2 during the first two quarters of its fiscal year, which ended on September 30. The company sold 6.49 million units over the six-month period, a 37.4 percent decrease compared to the 10.36 million units sold during the same timeframe in the previous fiscal year. The breakdown shows 3.82 million units sold in the first quarter and 2.67 million in the second quarter.
Price Increase Drives Sales Dip
The decline in Switch 2 sales coincides with a strategic price adjustment made by the gaming giant. In early May, Nintendo announced a $50 price increase for the console in the United States, raising the retail cost to $500. The company attributed this change to rising memory component costs and the impact of US tariffs. The earnings report covers the period starting in April, just one month before the price hike took effect.
Despite the lower hardware numbers, Nintendo stated that consumer adoption continued. The company noted that many users were still adopting the system, driven by the release of new game titles. The timing of the sales data suggests that the initial launch hype in June 2025 was followed by a natural cooling of demand, exacerbated by the higher entry price.

Profit Growth Despite Hardware Slump
While hardware unit sales fell, Nintendo’s financial health remained robust. The company reported an 11 percent increase in net profit compared to the same period last year. This growth was primarily fueled by strong software sales and the commercial success of the latest Super Mario movie. The revenue generated from games and media helped offset the reduction in console shipments.
Nintendo is maintaining its full-year forecast of 16.5 million Switch 2 units for the current fiscal year. This target is nearly 17 percent lower than the 19.86 million units sold in the previous year. The adjusted forecast indicates that the company anticipated the sales slowdown and factored the price increase into its projections. The release of the Ocarina of Time remake this week is expected to support software sales as the company moves into the next quarter.
