Dave Bautista Shines in Upcoming Action-Comedy “The Killer’s Game”

Dave Bautista, renowned for his roles in the Guardians of the Galaxy series and Blade Runner 2049, steps into the spotlight as the lead in Lionsgate's latest action-comedy, The Killer's Game. The film, set for release on September 13, 2024, is poised to rival the likes of the John Wick franchise with its blend of intense action and dark humor.

A Plot Rife with Action and Intrigue

“The Killer’s Game” revolves around veteran hitman Joe Flood, portrayed by Bautista, who is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Determined to spare his ex-girlfriend Macy (played by Sofia Boutella) the pain of watching him die, Joe takes the drastic step of ordering a hit on himself. However, when he learns that his diagnosis was a mistake, he finds himself in a deadly game of cat and mouse, trying to call off the hit while fending off an army of assassins intent on cashing in on his demise.

The movie draws heavy inspiration from the popular “John Wick” franchise, also produced by Lionsgate. The similarities are apparent, with both films featuring seasoned hitmen navigating their dangerous worlds with precision and skill. However, “The Killer’s Game” introduces a unique twist: the protagonist’s battle against his own death warrant, providing a fresh take on the hitman genre.

Dave Bautista’s Journey to Leading Man Status

For Bautista, “The Killer’s Game” represents a significant milestone in his career. Known for his roles in “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Dune”, Bautista has often played supporting characters. This film, however, sees him stepping into the full role of a leading man—kicking ass, delivering witty lines, and showcasing his ability to carry a film.

“I’ve never been, like, really a full-on leading man — you know, a guy who’s kicking ass and getting the girl and saying cool stuff,” Bautista shared in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE. “I think ‘Killer’s Game’ might be the first time I’ve been the full version of a leading man.”

The supporting cast of “The Killer’s Game” is equally impressive. Scottish WWE star Drew McIntyre makes a cameo as one of the assassins hunting Joe Flood. Though his appearance in the trailer is brief, it adds an extra layer of excitement for wrestling fans. Other notable names include action stalwarts Scott Adkins and Terry Crews, alongside award-winning actor Ben Kingsley.

The film also benefits from the directorial prowess of J.J. Perry, known for his work as a stunt performer and assistant director on numerous action films. Perry’s experience in choreographing action sequences is expected to bring a high-octane energy to the film, blending intense fight scenes with comedic and romantic moments.

A Mix of Action, Comedy, and (B)romance

“The Killer’s Game” is adapted from Jay Bonansinga’s 1997 novel of the same name. The screenplay, written by Rand Ravich and James Coyne, weaves together elements of action, comedy, and romance. According to Perry, “From my perspective, I actually didn’t set out to make an action movie. I set out to make a love story that had a head-on collision with a full-on action movie.”

This blend is evident in the trailer, which features Bautista navigating a series of explosive confrontations while attempting to rekindle his relationship with Macy. The comedic undertones add a layer of levity to the otherwise intense storyline, making the film a well-rounded entertainment package.

With its unique premise, dynamic action sequences, and a charismatic lead in Dave Bautista, “The Killer’s Game” is poised to be a standout film this fall. The movie’s blend of genres and stellar cast promise a thrilling cinematic experience that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

As the release date of September 13 approaches, anticipation continues to build. Fans of action films, as well as those who appreciate Bautista’s previous work, are eagerly awaiting what promises to be an exhilarating ride through the dangerous yet captivating world of “The Killer’s Game.”

Stay tuned for more updates and be sure to catch Dave Bautista in “The Killer’s Game” this September!
