Boar’s Head recalls 7 million pounds of deli meat
In a significant food safety alert, Boar’s Head Provisions Co., Inc. has expanded its recall of deli meats due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This recall now encompasses nearly 7 million additional pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products, alarming consumers and retailers nationwide.
List of Recalled Items
The recall includes a variety of deli meats, such as Applewood Smoked Uncured Ham, Old Country Brand Tavern Ham, and Boar’s Head Strassburger Brand Liverwurst. The affected products were produced between May 10, 2024, and July 29, 2024. Consumers are urged to return these products for a full refund.

Contaminated Ice Cream and Other Food Recalls
While Boar’s Head is grappling with this substantial recall, other food items are also facing similar issues. Notably, there has been an ice cream listeria recall impacting several brands. Listeria contamination in ice cream has raised concerns due to the bacteria’s ability to survive at freezing temperatures. The affected ice cream products have been pulled from shelves to prevent further illnesses.
Additionally, cheese on recall due to listeria contamination has further exacerbated food safety concerns. Retailers and consumers are advised to check product labels and follow recall instructions diligently.
Health Implications of Listeria Contamination
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause listeriosis, a serious infection primarily affecting pregnant women, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. In severe cases, it can lead to miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery, or life-threatening infections in newborns.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 34 confirmed cases of listeriosis across 13 states, resulting in 33 hospitalizations and two deaths. The majority of these cases have been linked to deli meats sliced at retail locations.
Retailers’ Response and Consumer Actions
Retailers such as Stop & Shop have taken proactive measures by temporarily closing their delis for deep cleaning and sanitization. The FSIS recommends that all retail delis clean and sanitize all food and non-food surfaces and discard any open meats and cheeses in the deli to prevent cross-contamination.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled Boar’s Head products or any other potentially contaminated items should not consume them. Instead, they should discard the products or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. It is also advised to thoroughly clean refrigerators and any surfaces that may have come into contact with the contaminated food.
