The iPhone Duo is now available, but its $2,000 price tag comes with significant financial risk if the device is damaged. While the foldable phone combines an iPhone and an iPad mini into a single portable unit, the engineering required to create a flexible screen introduces vulnerabilities that standard smartphones do not face. For owners, the most critical decision is whether to purchase extended warranty coverage.
iPhone Duo repair expenses exceed device value
Apple has published service pricing for the iPhone Duo that reveals the high cost of maintaining a foldable device. The outer display, which measures 5.4 inches, costs $379 to repair. The main attraction, a 7.6-inch inner screen with a nano-textured surface, carries a repair cost of $999. This figure is more than the price of a new iPhone 17 or an iPad mini with maximum storage capacity.
Additional damage incurs steep fees. Back glass repairs start at $199. Battery service and rear camera fixes are $229 each. The most severe category, labeled “other damage,” costs $1,499. This blanket fee likely covers hinge failures, bending damage, or internal component issues involving the processor and storage. This amount is more than the base price of a MacBook Air, according to Apple’s service documentation.
These costs make the iPhone Duo a high-stakes purchase. Without coverage, a single accident involving the inner screen or hinge could require a replacement cost that rivals the price of a new laptop. The structural complexity of the foldable mechanism means that standard drop protection is insufficient to guarantee safety.
AppleCare One cost and coverage details
Apple offers two subscription options to mitigate these risks. AppleCare+ costs $20 per month or $200 annually. AppleCare One is priced at $20 per month for individual users or $50 per month for family plans. If a user already holds an AppleCare One family plan or an individual plan for an older iPhone, the new Duo may be added at no extra cost.
For new subscribers, the two-year cost is either $400 or $480. Before Apple reduced its service fees, these subscriptions were less than half the cost of repairing the inner display. The current reduced service fees under AppleCare+ range from $19 for cover layer fixes to $99 for other damage. This makes the subscription a financial safeguard against the $999 inner screen repair fee.
AppleCare+ also includes coverage for theft and loss, which carries a $149 fee per incident. This feature adds value for frequent travelers or users who are prone to misplacing their devices. The combination of accident, theft, and loss coverage makes the subscription a practical necessity for the iPhone Duo.
Physical vulnerabilities of the foldable design
Protective cases can help mitigate drop damage. Apple and third-party cases often feature raised edges around the displays and camera bumps. These designs absorb impact before it reaches vulnerable components. The front display uses Ceramic Shield 2 glass, developed with Corning. The back glass also uses Ceramic Shield, and the frame is made of titanium.
However, the inner display lacks Ceramic Shield protection. Because the screen must bend, it cannot use the same rigid glass technology. Dropping the phone while it is fully open poses a serious risk to the inner screen. The durability of the hinge and the resistance of the nano-texture surface to scratches from fingernails or debris remain unproven factors.
Scratches are a known issue on other foldable phones. Apple has not confirmed that it has solved this problem for the Duo. The combination of an unprotected inner screen, a complex hinge, and the high cost of repairs makes extended warranty coverage a virtual requirement. Skipping the Duo is a safer financial choice than risking out-of-pocket repair bills that exceed the device’s base price.
