Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus Zero brought a palpable energy to the Tokyo International Film Festival on Sunday, drawing sold-out crowds and enthusiastic applause during two special screenings. The sequel to the 2023 hit Godzilla Minus One serves as the centerpiece film for this year’s festival, arriving just days before its commercial release in Japan on November 3.

    Festival Premiere Draws Costumed Fans

The screenings at Hulic Hall Tokyo were among the most lively events of the festival. Attendees arrived in costume or carrying Gojira figurines, reflecting the deep engagement of kaiju enthusiasts. When the credits rolled, the typically reserved Japanese audience erupted into applause, with many smiling and discussing their favorite monster moments as they left into the Ginza district.

The film’s reception suggests Yamazaki has successfully captured the tone that made the predecessor a global phenomenon. Godzilla Minus One became the highest-grossing live-action Japanese film in North America, earning $57.1 million, and made history by winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. It was the first entry in the multi-decade franchise to win an Oscar, competing against Hollywood productions with significantly larger budgets.

    Cast Discusses Family and Conflict

Stars Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe took the stage to introduce the screenings and speak with fans. Kamiki noted that he felt both excitement and apprehension as the release date approached, sensing the high level of anticipation among viewers. Hamabe acknowledged the pressure of following a beloved film, stating that the sequel needed to be even bigger and better.

The duo was joined by child actress Sae Nagatani, who plays Akiko, the adopted daughter of their characters. Kamiki explained that the narrative centers on the Shikishima family’s struggle to maintain peace in 1949, two years after the events of the first film. He highlighted the tension between protecting loved ones and the difficult choices forced upon them by the return of Godzilla.

Hamabe expressed her hope that audiences would enjoy the story of the Shikishima family and the monster experience. The film also introduces King Ghidorah, the three-headed kaiju, into Yamazaki’s postwar setting, adding a new layer of threat to the rebuilding nation.

Strong Critical Response Ahead of Release

Godzilla Minus Zero premiered in September at the New York Film Festival, where it received positive reviews. David Rooney, chief critic for The Hollywood Reporter, described the film as a radioactive blast and a crackling kaiju epic that matches the excitement of its predecessor. The movie currently holds a 92 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 52 reviews.

GKIDS will release the film in North American cinemas on November 6, following IMAX early-access screenings on November 3. The strong festival response and critical acclaim suggest a promising start for the sequel in international markets.
