John Leeson, the English actor best known for providing the voice of the robotic dog K9 on the long-running science fiction series Doctor Who, died on Sunday. He was 83.

His son, Guy Ducker, confirmed the death in a Facebook post. He stated that Leeson passed away at 3:03 p.m. after a summer of illness. Ducker described the end as peaceful and included a quote from William Shakespeare: “Good night sweet prince: And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!”

Decades of Voice Work on Doctor Who

Leeson first voiced the character in 1977 during the tenure of Tom Baker as the Doctor. He continued in the role through 1981, reprising it in 1983 with Peter Davison. His work as the robotic companion extended to the 30th anniversary special in 1993 and appearances during David Tennant’s era in 2006 and 2008.

The character became a staple of the franchise, known for the catchphrase “Affirmative, master.” Leeson’s performance allowed K9 to appear in several spinoffs, including the 1981 TV movie K-9 and Company, the series The Sarah Jane Adventures from 2007 to 2010, and the children’s show K9 from 2009 to 2010.

Current showrunner Russell T Davies paid tribute to Leeson on Instagram. Davies recalled deciding to bring the character back in 2006 and stated there was no question about asking Leeson to return. He noted that it was impossible to imagine anyone else in the role.

Davies described the character as a “posh dog, uppity, haughty, wry, but somehow innocent too, and so funny.” He praised Leeson’s acting skills, noting that the pitch was perfect for children to impersonate. Davies also remembered Leeson as a dedicated professional who remained gracious even when payment issues arose.

    Early Career and Stage Name

Leeson was born John Ducker in Leicester, England, on March 16, 1943. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London from 1962 to 1964, where he adopted his stage name. He began his career in theater before moving to television.

His early television work included a guest appearance on the sitcom Dad’s Army in 1969. He later became a regular on the children’s program Rainbow, where he played Bungle, a furry bear. These roles established his presence in British family entertainment before he took on the role that would define his legacy.

Leeson’s contribution to Doctor Who spanned six decades. His ability to convey personality through voice alone made K9 one of the most recognizable characters in the series. His death marks the end of an era for fans of the show and the broader science fiction community.
