United Airlines has taken delivery of its first Airbus A321neo Coastliner, marking a significant milestone in the carrier’s plan to upgrade its domestic premium service. The airline announced the delivery on Thursday evening, sharing images of the aircraft’s exterior which features a special wrap with the “Coastliner” decal.

The new jet is designed exclusively for the carrier’s most lucrative domestic routes. United plans to deploy the aircraft on high-demand coast-to-coast flights, including services between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), as well as Newark and San Francisco International Airport (SFO). The airline also indicated the plane will likely play a role in its future operations at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) once United resumes service there.

    Interior Configuration and Premium Features

The Coastliner features a premium-heavy interior layout that mirrors the design of the Airbus A321XLR, which United recently introduced for its international European routes. The aircraft includes 10 rows of Polaris business-class suites, totaling 20 seats. These suites are arranged in a one-by-one configuration and feature sliding privacy doors. Passengers flying in these suites will have access to United’s Polaris Lounge facilities.

Behind the business class cabin, the aircraft offers 12 Premium Plus recliners spread across three rows in a two-by-two configuration. This setup aims to provide a more spacious and comfortable experience for economy-plus travelers on long-haul domestic flights.

    Delayed Debut and Competitive Landscape

United had originally hoped to launch service on the Coastliner this past summer. However, delays at Airbus pushed the debut back a few months. The airline now states the jet is slated to make its inaugural flight in early 2027. This timeline adjustment reflects the broader challenges in aircraft manufacturing and delivery schedules affecting the industry.

The introduction of the Coastliner comes as U.S. carriers continue to upgrade their top transcontinental products. Alaska Airlines recently revealed plans to add lie-flat suites and premium economy to a future subfleet of Boeing 737 MAX 10 jets. American Airlines launched coast-to-coast service with the A321XLR last year, featuring its latest-generation Flagship Suites. Delta Air Lines has rolled out an A321neo variant featuring 44 domestic first-class recliners, while JetBlue recently expanded lounge access for its Mint cabin passengers.

United has ordered 50 Coastliner aircraft along with 50 A321XLR jets for the coming years. This fleet expansion is expected to be a key component of the carrier’s strategy to compete in the premium domestic market for years to come.
