Anthropic published a detailed report on Friday outlining significant shifts in its internal operations over the past year. The company states that its experience with artificial intelligence offers a preview of how AI might reshape hiring, labor demand, and work organization across the broader economy.
The report highlights a sharp decline in junior-level roles within technical departments. Since early 2025, the proportion of junior employees in these areas has fallen from 21% to 14%. The drop in new junior technical hires is even more pronounced, decreasing from 27% to just 9%.
Anthropic attributes part of this shift to the expansion of non-technical business functions as the company scales. The company also noted that coding tools are enabling non-technical staff to build software independently, reducing the need for large teams of entry-level engineers.

Human Judgment Becomes a Bottleneck
While AI tools like Claude have increased output, they have also created new challenges. One employee described an “eternal pressure at Anthropic to move as fast as possible and use Claude for everything.” An April 2026 survey found that 27% of employees felt more productive due to Claude, while 20% said their role had shifted from doing work to managing the AI.
One engineer compared the experience to babysitting, noting that every AI model brings concerns with equal demand for attention. The report suggests that human attention and judgment are now a bottleneck for productivity. Claude produces a deluge of text that requires significant time to read, organize, and verify.

Anthropic acknowledged that more code does not necessarily mean better code or greater business impact. However, the company stated it has not found any evidence that code quality is declining despite the increase in volume.
Meeting Time Increases by 20%
Calendar data included in the report shows that meeting time per employee has risen by 20% compared to a year ago. For technical contributors, the increase is 16%. Anthropic links this trend to the importance of human trust and accountability. Employees repeatedly described face-to-face coordination as indispensable for maintaining alignment.
The report indicates that AI adoption has made the company more productive in several areas. Employees are writing more code per person, closing more sales per representative, and processing more contracts. These metrics suggest that while the nature of the work is changing, the overall efficiency of the workforce is improving.

Anthropic argues that its workplace trends could serve as indicators for how AI will shift work organization, hiring, and labor demand across the economy. The company has thoroughly molded its workflows around AI, providing a unique glimpse into how a major technology firm operates in an AI-integrated environment.
