Dogs have become a prominent fixture in the front rows of recent fashion week shows, appearing alongside high-profile celebrities and industry insiders. From Louis Vuitton to Schiaparelli, four-legged companions are drawing significant attention from photographers and attendees, often competing with traditional status symbols like luxury handbags for the spotlight.
During the most recent fashion week cycle, which concluded on Tuesday, the front rows featured a mix of Hollywood stars and their pets. Attendees included Jacob Elordi, Rihanna, Dua Lipa, and Nicole Kidman. However, the presence of dogs was notable across multiple venues. A cavapoo was seen at Louis Vuitton, while a shih tzu appeared at Schiaparelli. At the Balenciaga show, creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli sat next to his rescue dog, Miranda Priestly. Tommy Hilfiger also posed with a samoyed that stars in the brand’s campaigns.
Canine Fashion Trends and Industry Shifts
The visibility of dogs at these events reflects a broader cultural shift. Specialist clothing for pets and dedicated fashion magazine covers featuring dogs are becoming more common. This trend extends beyond A-list celebrities to regular fashion attendees. Madeleine Rothery, a freelance fashion writer, has brought her Boston terrier, Disco, to shows for the past two years. Rothery noted that the dog helps break the ice at events where guests often feel self-conscious or glued to their phones.
Prada, a five-year-old teacup pomchi, has also become a regular face at shows in London. Her owner, Tori West, editor of Bricks magazine, stated that street style photographers frequently call out to Prada. West described the dog as having built her own fashion community. However, the presence of dogs is not without logistical challenges. Rothery mentioned that many Parisian venues are cultural institutions that ban dogs, requiring creative solutions for access.
Support Animals and Accessibility
For some attendees, dogs serve a critical functional role. Prada is registered as a support animal for West, who suffers from anxiety. West stated that having Prada with her provides stability and comfort during the stressful fashion week schedule. She attended every show except two where loud music was anticipated. West observed that the increased visibility of dogs suggests the industry is reconsidering the needs of guests who require assistance animals.
West noted that historically, people with children, carers, or assistance animals have been overlooked in hyper-controlled fashion environments. She argued that venues which are not pet-friendly are often not chill, and she prefers to avoid spaces that cause stress. For Rothery, Disco’s presence serves as a grounding force, reminding her of life outside the fashion bubble. The dog’s need for walks and care helps manage the pressure of the event schedule.
The trend of dogs at fashion week is not entirely new. Demi Moore’s chihuahua, Pilaf, was a regular guest in the past, and Paris Hilton’s dog, Gizmo Hilton, made a debut at a Gucci show. However, the current wave includes more diverse breeds and a wider range of attendees. Vogue recently highlighted Poppy, a tiara-wearing shih tzu who has become a staple on the couture circuit.
As the industry continues to evolve, the presence of dogs in exclusive spaces signals a potential change in attitudes toward accessibility and guest comfort. The integration of pets into these high-profile events highlights a growing recognition of the role animals play in people’s lives, both for companionship and support.
