The market for Android-based gaming handhelds has expanded significantly, with manufacturers like Retroid, AYN, and Anbernic releasing devices that feature two separate displays. While these units come with pre-installed interfaces, a new option called Blip is now available to provide a more tailored experience for these specific form factors.
Blip is an Android launcher developed by a Spanish software engineer known as Endika. The application is built to handle the unique hardware requirements of dual-screen devices. When launching a game intended for two displays, the launcher automatically splits the interface to utilize both screens. For single-screen titles, it repurposes the lower display to show supplementary content such as game artwork, instruction booklets, or detailed metadata.
Features and Integration
The launcher includes support for RetroAchievements, a community platform that adds achievement tracking to classic games. It also integrates with RomM, a self-hosted application used for scanning and organizing ROM collections. These advanced features are not free; users must pay a one-time fee to unlock them. The base launcher remains available for download without this cost.
Endika is currently developing a service called Blip Cloud. This feature allows users to back up their game saves and synchronize them across multiple devices. The service is currently in private beta. Once fully released, users will receive 100MB of storage for free. This functionality addresses a common pain point for handheld gamers who switch between devices.
Compatibility and Availability
Blip supports nine languages, including English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, and simplified Chinese. The launcher is compatible with a wide range of hardware. It works with devices from AYN, such as the Thor and Odin models. It also supports Retroid Pocket handhelds, AYANEO Android Pocket devices, and Anbernic RG handhelds.
Beyond dedicated gaming handhelds, the launcher is compatible with standard Android phones and tablets running Android 12 or later. It is currently available for download on the Google Play Store. This broad compatibility ensures that users with various devices can access the interface without needing to modify their system software.
The launcher offers nine different themes for customization. This allows users to adjust the visual appearance of the interface to their preference. The combination of hardware-specific optimization, cloud save support, and broad device compatibility positions Blip as a significant option for owners of dual-screen Android devices.
