Players entering Cat-Astrophy do not begin their expeditions with a predetermined set of abilities. Instead, the game relies on a modular system that allows characters to evolve based on discoveries made during the run. This approach ensures that two playthroughs on the same planet can feel entirely different, as the core strategy emerges from the items collected and the situations encountered.
Modular Abilities and Combat Synergies
The foundation of the gameplay lies in finding modules that alter specific stats or systems. These components can enhance close-range combat, improve mobility, increase defense, or support a more strategic playstyle. Because these choices are made in real time, players must adapt to the resources available rather than following a fixed path.

Complexity increases when modules begin to interact. Some components evolve over time, while others reveal hidden synergies only when combined. A seemingly minor upgrade can fundamentally change how a character moves or attacks. This turns each expedition into an experiment where players test combinations to see which strategies yield the best results.
Combat mechanics further support this flexibility. Attacks are directional, allowing strikes forward, upward, or downward. Each direction offers different variants that can be tailored to the current build. A fatigue system prevents players from relying on a single optimal combo, forcing them to balance aggression with recovery. This design rewards precision and adaptation over repetitive patterns.

Route Selection and Permanent Progression
Strategic planning extends beyond the character itself. Players select their route from a central hub ship, choosing the order in which they visit different planets. Each world presents unique mechanics, enemy types, and rewards. One route might favor an aggressive build, while another supports a defensive or mobile approach. Rooms within these planets are not linear, offering combat, parkour challenges, events, shops, and minibosses that allow for deviation from the planned path.
Failure does not erase all progress. When an expedition ends, players retain Star Fragments that unlock permanent upgrades. These can include new abilities, additional routes, or expanded options for future runs. Memory fragments also provide narrative context, revealing the backstory of the protagonist, Polo, and the circumstances of his abduction.

This dual-layer progression system ensures that every run contributes to long-term growth. The immediate goal is to survive and optimize the current build, while the broader objective is to unlock new possibilities for subsequent attempts. The game is available now on Xbox, Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation.
