Nithya Raman, a democratic socialist and current Los Angeles city council member, has won the race for mayor, defeating incumbent Karen Bass. The result stunned political observers in California, as Raman entered the contest as a long-shot candidate against a political heavyweight who had never previously lost an election for public office.
Bass, the city’s first Black mayor and a former member of Congress, announced her concession on social media on Thursday. She wrote that while the outcome was not what she hoped for, the people of Los Angeles had spoken. Bass stated that moving the city forward is what is needed and affirmed her belief in the city’s promise for all residents.
A Shift in Progressive Leadership
Raman’s victory solidifies a trend of progressive leadership in America’s largest cities. She has been frequently compared to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, another democratic socialist who ran on a similar progressive platform. With Raman’s win, the two most populous cities in the United States will now be led by democratic socialists, joining other high-profile figures in the movement such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The election in Los Angeles, the second most populous city in the US, raised questions about how far left voters were willing to go. While the city was expected to elect a Democrat, the choice between the establishment candidate and a progressive challenger defined the race. Raman, an Indian immigrant and city council member, campaigned on fixing what she described as a broken status quo and politicians who had failed residents repeatedly.
Key Issues and Campaign Platform
Raman’s platform focused on several critical local issues. She pledged to cut homelessness, increase housing availability, and protect residents from immigration enforcement efforts. Her campaign also addressed the preservation of Hollywood jobs amid continued cuts, beautification efforts, road repairs, and the revival of the city’s nightlife.
The Los Angeles fires of 2025 emerged as a major factor in the election. The disasters killed dozens of people and razed neighborhoods across the area. Bass faced intense political fallout regarding her absence during the emergency and the city’s overall response to the crisis. Despite entering the race as an underdog, Raman slowly shored up support, particularly from younger voters, before defeating reality star Spencer Pratt in the primary election earlier this year.
President Donald Trump was asked about the wins by left-flank Democratic politicians at the White House. He responded by citing history, stating that such outcomes would be a disaster. These candidates have become a focal point for attacks by Republicans during the midterm elections.
Raman’s win mirrors broader voter sentiment across the US, including Democratic victories in traditionally Republican areas. Washington DC also elected democratic socialist Janeese Lewis George as its new mayor, furthering progressive leadership in another major city. The next mayor of Los Angeles will oversee hosting the Super Bowl in 2027 and the 2028 Summer Olympics.
