Walter Koenig, the actor best known for his role as the spirited navigator Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek television series, has died. He was 90.

Representatives for Koenig confirmed to the BBC that he passed away on Sunday night at his home in North Hollywood. The cause was listed as old age. He was surrounded by his daughter and niece at the time of his death.

    Tributes from Star Trek Co-Stars

News of his passing prompted an outpouring of grief from the cast of the classic 1960s sci-fi show. George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu, led the tributes on social media. He described Koenig as more than just the character of Chekov, highlighting his work as a writer, teacher, and loyal friend.

“Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course,” Takei wrote.

William Shatner, who portrayed Captain James T. Kirk, expressed that he was deeply saddened by the news. He noted that Koenig had a genuine love for the Star Trek community, a connection he described as rare and memorable for everyone who knew him.

A statement from Koenig’s representatives emphasized his lasting impact on fans worldwide, citing his talent, warmth, and unforgettable performances.

A Career Spanning Decades of Sci-Fi

Koenig first appeared as Chekov in the second season of Star Trek in 1967, remaining with the show until its cancellation in 1969. The character was introduced partly to appeal to younger audiences with a youthful look, and partly as a response to criticism from the Soviet press regarding the lack of a Russian character on the bridge of the USS Enterprise.

He reprised the role in six Star Trek films released between 1979 and 1991. His seventh and final live-action appearance in the franchise was a brief role in the 1994 film Generations, which primarily featured the cast of The Next Generation. He later voiced President Anton Chekov in the modern series Star Trek: Picard in 2023.

Beyond Star Trek, Koenig took on a drastically different role in the mid-1990s. He played the ruthless telepath Alfred Bester in the space opera series Babylon 5. His other television credits included appearances in Columbo and Futurama.

Earlier this year, his performance in the short film Mr Fleischmann earned him the Platinum Award for best actor at the 2026 Independent Shorts Awards, recognizing his continued dedication to his craft.

    Early Life and Personal Tragedies

Born in Chicago and raised in Manhattan, Koenig was the son of Soviet Jewish immigrants with family roots in Lithuania. He studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York, where he trained alongside actors such as James Caan and Christopher Lloyd.

His personal life included significant highs and lows. He married Judy Levitt in 1965. She appeared alongside him in three Star Trek movies and in Babylon 5. They remained married until her death in 2022.

The family faced a profound tragedy in 2010 when their son, Andrew Koenig, died by suicide at the age of 41. Andrew was an actor known for his role as Richard “Boner” Stabone on the sitcom Growing Pains.

Walter Koenig is survived by his daughter, Danielle Koenig, who is an actress and screenwriter known for her work on the animated series Star vs. the Forces of Evil.
