Samsung is expanding its portfolio of wide foldable smartphones with potential new models, according to recent reports. The company is reportedly testing two distinct variations of the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 9 to capitalize on the success of its predecessor. These new devices would sit alongside the standard Galaxy Z Fold 9 (Wide) in the company’s lineup.
Testing Larger and Budget Options
Leaker Lanzuk, posting on the Naver platform, cited unnamed display supply chain sources to detail the internal testing. The reports indicate Samsung is evaluating two specific hardware directions. The first is a larger-screened model similar to a Plus variant, featuring slightly increased dimensions. The second is a more affordable option with reduced specifications while maintaining the existing form factor size.
Despite testing both directions, Samsung plans to select only one variation for production. An internal decision on which path to pursue is expected to be made soon. This strategy aims to provide consumers with more choices within the passport-style foldable category without fragmenting the market too heavily.
Building on Fold 8 Success
The push for additional models follows stronger-than-expected demand for the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Samsung’s pivot toward a wider aspect ratio for its book-style foldables appears to be resonating with users. The company is now looking to double down on this momentum by offering differentiated products. A larger screen option would appeal to power users seeking more display real estate, while a trimmed-spec model could attract price-sensitive buyers.
This expansion also serves to differentiate Samsung’s foldable catalog against competitors. The iPhone Duo, a rumored wide foldable from Apple, represents a potential threat in this segment. By offering multiple options, Samsung can better compete for market share in the evolving foldable landscape.
Industry observers note that Samsung is becoming more open to exploring experimental form factors. Previous leaks have suggested the company is also working on a Galaxy Z Slide and a Fold 9 Pro. The addition of a Plus or FE model would further diversify the brand’s offerings in the near future.
These reports should be treated with caution as they concern devices that will not launch until at least mid-2027. Samsung has not officially confirmed any plans for these additional wide foldable models. Companies typically do not comment on unannounced products, so the information remains speculative. However, the success of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the broader foldable market suggests that more options for consumers are likely on the horizon.
