Airbnb has officially committed to releasing its proprietary AI travel agent in the first half of 2027. The announcement, included in the company’s third-quarter shareholder letter, provides the first concrete timeline for a project CEO Brian Chesky has discussed for months. The platform intends to move away from text-heavy chatbots in favor of a dynamic, visual interface tailored specifically for travel planning.
A Generative Interface for Trip Planning
Chesky has long argued that standard large language model chatbots are ill-suited for the complexities of travel. During a recent earnings call, he emphasized that planning a vacation is an aspirational activity that involves browsing, comparing options, and collaborating with travel companions. According to Chesky, 80% of travelers enjoy the research phase of trip planning, making a purely text-based interaction insufficient for the task.
The upcoming Airbnb AI travel agent will utilize what the company describes as “generative UI.” Instead of generating paragraphs of text, the system will assemble a custom interface in real time based on user queries. This interface will pull from a library of travel-specific components, including interactive maps, photo galleries, calendar views, and comparison tools. The goal is to present the right visual elements at the right moment to match the user’s specific needs.
“What we are doing is developing a custom-designed AI-native experience that responds to what guests are looking for,” Chesky said. He noted that the agent will draw on Airbnb’s nearly two decades of data regarding how hosts and guests interact on the platform to refine its recommendations and interface design.
Expanding Beyond Booking
The agent is designed to assist travelers throughout the entire journey, not just during the initial booking process. Airbnb stated that the tool will help with post-booking tasks such as modifying reservations, resolving payment issues, processing refunds, and rebooking accommodations. The company also highlighted the agent’s ability to provide 24-hour safety support, a feature that external AI tools cannot easily replicate due to lack of access to internal guest and host data.
Looking further ahead, Airbnb plans to expand the agent’s capabilities to include services and experiences. These categories have become a strategic priority for the company following a platform redesign last year. The agent will eventually help users discover and book local activities and services alongside their accommodations.
The technology announcement coincided with strong financial results for the third quarter. Airbnb reported revenue of $4.87 billion, a 19% increase from the previous year, which surpassed Wall Street expectations. The company also raised its full-year 2026 revenue growth forecast to the high teens, up from previous mid-teens estimates.
“Airbnb is back in growth mode,” Chesky told analysts. “It’s rare for a marketplace of our size to reaccelerate growth, but that’s exactly what we’re doing. Q3 was our fastest revenue growth in more than three years.”
