Carrying excess body weight may accelerate the aging of the brain, according to new research from the University of Georgia. The study suggests that a higher body mass index (BMI) is associated with a faster rate of cognitive decline in adults over the age of 50. This finding adds to the growing body of evidence linking physical health metrics to long-term brain function.

Long-Term Data Shows Weight Impact on Memory

The research team analyzed data from a nationally representative study that tracked more than 8,200 adults for 24 years. The goal was to understand how physical changes over time correlate with mental sharpness. The results showed a consistent relationship between body weight and cognitive health.

Each one-point increase in BMI was associated with a faster rate of cognitive decline. This trend was most pronounced in adults older than 65 and reached its strongest point at the eighth year of the study. The decline affected memory, overall cognitive performance, and executive functioning. Executive functions include the ability to concentrate, plan, organize tasks, and regulate emotions.

While some memory loss is a natural part of aging, the study indicates that excess weight can speed up this process. For healthy adults, cognitive changes are typically mild and gradual. The data suggests that higher BMI pushes these changes into a steeper trajectory.

Weight Management as a Protective Factor

Despite the concerning link between weight and brain health, the researchers identified a potential way to mitigate the risk. Managing body weight may help slow cognitive decline. The study found that individuals who managed their weight saw significant benefits in just two years.

“We found that if people managed their weight, they could significantly lower their rate of cognitive decline in just two years,” said Suhang Song, the study’s lead author and an assistant professor at the University of Georgia’s College of Public Health. “That makes BMI one of the most easily modifiable risk factors when it comes to aging well.”

Scientists are still investigating the biological mechanisms behind this connection. Excess weight may promote inflammation, impair blood circulation, and contribute to insulin resistance. These physiological changes could increase the likelihood of cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease, and other forms of dementia.

Public Health Implications for Dementia Prevention

The findings are particularly relevant given the prevalence of obesity in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately two in five Americans meet the criteria for obesity based on BMI alone. Some experts argue that BMI does not provide a complete picture, as it does not account for waist measurements or associated medical conditions. When these additional criteria are included, the estimated proportion of Americans with obesity rises to 75 percent.

This issue is critical as dementia becomes increasingly common. More than 7 million Americans currently live with dementia, and researchers expect that number to double by 2050. Although the study does not prove that excess weight directly causes cognitive decline, it highlights body weight as a potentially important factor in maintaining cognitive health.

Because weight can be managed, researchers believe it offers a practical opportunity to reduce the risk of worsening memory and thinking abilities. “There are no cures for dementia,” Song said, “which is why it is critical to identify and address any modifiable risk factors we can find to prevent it.”

The research was published in the Journal of Neurology. Coauthors from the University of Georgia College of Public Health include Meng Hsuan Sung, Zhuo Chen, Janani Rajbhandari, Grace Bagwell Adams, Mahmud Khan, Ye Shen, and Xiao Song. Qianhui Xu and Xia Song also contributed to the study.
