Irish DJ and singer Jazzy has released her debut album, Peace and Patience, marking a significant milestone in a career defined by viral dance hits and massive streaming numbers. The 30-year-old artist, born Yasmine Byrne, has accumulated over one billion streams and collaborated with major industry figures like Calvin Harris and Sonny Fodera.

While Jazzy has built a monthly listenership exceeding 10 million through dozens of singles, she notes that the music industry has shifted toward shorter formats. She decided to release a full-length record to capture a more complete artistic vision, moving away from the trend of prioritizing viral singles over cohesive albums.

The new record represents a departure from the purely upbeat tracks that have defined her recent success. Jazzy describes the project as more personal, aiming to share experiences from her time in the music industry. She highlights the track Invisible as a notable shift in tone, calling it her first diss track and a way to open up about difficult professional encounters.

“I wasn’t thinking about going viral or anything like that,” Jazzy told BBC Newsbeat. “I just wanted to make something that was true to me and sounded like a Jazzy album.” She added that her years of creating smaller projects provided the experience needed to feel the timing was right for a full release.

    Dublin 3Arena headline show

Before embarking on a UK tour next month, Jazzy will perform her biggest show to date this Saturday at Dublin’s 3Arena. The event marks a homecoming for the artist, who started her career in the Dublin club scene as part of the group Powerful Creative Minds. She describes the headline slot as the biggest milestone of her career so far, surpassing previous high-profile performances at Coachella and supporting Calvin Harris.

Jazzy plans to perform tracks from her new album alongside fan favorites like No Bad Vibes and Somedays. The show comes at a time when dance music continues to dominate festival lineups, with Spotify reporting a 73% global increase in listeners under 25 for the genre since 2020.

    Decline of club culture

Despite the digital success of dance music, Jazzy expressed concern over the physical spaces that nurture the genre. She pointed to the closure of numerous nightclubs in both the UK and Ireland as a threat to the community aspect of the scene. Data from the Night Time Industries Association indicates that approximately 12 venues close every month in the UK, with the sector still recovering from pandemic-era losses.

“There was a lot more nightclubs to go to and it’s very different when we look at it now, which is sad,” she said. Jazzy emphasized the importance of keeping club culture alive, noting that while the internet provides a home for dance music, offline venues remain essential for artists to develop and for fans to connect.
