South African jurist Navi Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday. The committee honored the former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for her lifelong dedication to promoting peace and strengthening international law.

In a statement released on Friday, the committee cited Pillay’s exceptional courage and integrity in leading the way toward a more comprehensive global legal order. The award recognizes her instrumental role in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide are prosecuted on the international stage.

A Career Spanning Decades of Justice

Pillay’s career extends over 50 years, beginning with her fight against apartheid in South Africa and continuing through her defense of civilians in active conflict zones. Born in 1941 to a Tamil Indian family, she became the first non-white woman to establish a legal practice in South Africa.

As a lawyer, she served as a defense attorney for anti-apartheid activists. Her work exposed torture and helped establish key rights for prisoners on Robben Island, where she also defended Nelson Mandela and others who stood up against the apartheid regime.

Her legal expertise later took her to the highest levels of international justice. She served as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), where she helped establish groundbreaking legal precedents in the fight against genocide and gender-based violence. She also served as a judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague and as an ad hoc judge with the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Additionally, Pillay chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The Nobel Committee noted that a common thread runs from her early work defending activists to her service as a judge in key international court cases.

Reaction from the UN and Human Rights Community

Volker Türk, the current UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, congratulated Pillay, describing her as a big sister. He stated that the award was well deserved and particularly poignant at a time when human rights are under attack on many fronts.

Türk emphasized that the award is a recognition of the rule of law and justice as fundamental to peace, security, and prosperity. He noted that it is also an award to all those around the world who dedicate their lives to the defense of human rights, often at great risk to their own security.

In an October 2025 interview with UN News, Pillay reflected on the collective support that helped end apartheid. She recalled that she did not think apartheid would end in her lifetime but credited the global movement, including children, for the change. She expressed hope that this collective action could lead to a better human rights protection system.

Pillay served as the UN human rights chief from September 2008 through August 2014. During her tenure, she championed the participation of civil society and victims in shaping global human rights standards. She often noted that progress in human rights comes from the pressure of civil society rather than just state initiatives.
