Tim Sweeney, the chief executive of Epic Games, is doubling down on his support for artificial intelligence in video game development. He argues that the technology has improved significantly over the past year and is poised to trigger a “golden age of gaming.” This stance comes despite growing resistance from many gamers and industry professionals who remain skeptical of AI integration.

Epic Games AI Retooling and Developer Shifts

Sweeney recently took to X to address reports that Epic Games is prioritizing AI in the development of an upcoming Disney title. He stated that the company is “moving developers around to retool for maximum AI acceleration.” The goal, according to Sweeney, is to maximize efficiency to produce more software of higher quality.

He drew a comparison to his early career, noting that the time he spent coding to create Unreal Engine 1 could have been saved by using AI. He believes artificial intelligence would have been capable of performing that work just as well. Sweeney contends that AI will allow developers to spend fewer resources on large-scale games, thereby accelerating the industry’s creative potential.

The reaction to these statements has been mixed. While some surveys suggest gamers are becoming more comfortable with AI, the wider community remains largely critical. The announcement regarding the Disney project reinforced this sentiment, with many users expressing disagreement in the replies to Sweeney’s posts.

    Fortnite NPCs and Launcher Controversy

Controversy surrounding Epic Games AI usage has intensified in recent months. Rumors suggest that some developers are refusing to work with Epic on Fortnite collaborations due to the company’s aggressive adoption of artificial intelligence. Fortnite has already implemented AI to enable fully fleshed-out conversations between players and non-player characters (NPCs).

Further reports indicate that developers at Epic have been told there is “no more hand-written code” and are expected to use AI tools instead. This shift was highlighted by the release of Epic’s new launcher, which is currently available for preview. The launcher was “vibe coded,” meaning the code was generated based on prompts given to AI rather than written manually by programmers.

The launch of the new launcher, designed to compete with Steam, has drawn criticism from fans who feel the creation lacked effort. Sweeney’s refusal to back down from his pro-AI position suggests that Epic’s future products will serve as a test for player comfort with generative AI. If conservative partners like Disney continue to experiment with video game AI, other developers are likely to follow suit.
